Fly Fishing Gear for Soda Butte Creek - Yellowstone National Park
You could easily get by using a five weight floating fly line for all of the fishing in Soda Butte
Creek. You may also want a 6 weight floating line to fish nymphs and streamers.
You would want a fly rod to handle each of the line sizes you choose to use. The four, five and
six weight rods would be ideal at a length of nine feet. We think a medium fast to fast action rod
would are best.
The reels for the four, five and six weight lines should be light and have good drags. The drags
should be smooth and adjust to fine increments.
A nine foot leader length would probably be the best all around length. You may also want a
71/2 foot length for fishing nymphs and small streamers. The only other exception would be
when you are fishing streamers whereas you may want a short leader of only 3 or 4 feet. Make
sure you have leaders in sizes ranging from 1X for streamers up to 6X for small flies.
You should also have plenty of extra tippet in sizes ranging from 1X to 6X.
Waders are necessary most anywhere you would fish Soda Butte Creek even though you may
be able to cast all the way across the stream. They come in handy getting though the high
grass of the meadows, especially if it is wet. We prefer the breathable type.
Felt soles would still be our choice. The new rubber soles may work okay. We haven't tested
them in Soda Butte Creek yet.
The use of a wading staff would be an optional accessory. The stream is fairly easy to wade.
A landing net would be purely optional for Soda Butte Creek.
We recommend our "Perfect Fly" trout flies. We have specific imitations of everything insect
that exist in Soda Butte Creek. Many of our flies have been tested and proven to work in this
stream. If you haven't done so already, we hope you will give them an opportunity to work for
you. We feel confident that you will be glad you did.
