Fly Fishing Gear and Trout Flies for Spring Creek, Pennsylvania
This is a limestone spring creek which means that even though it is small in many places, it still
contains some large brown trout. Although it may appear that a 2 weight fly outfit would work
just fine, you don't want to hook a good trout and lose it because your tackle was just too light.

Fly Line:
We suggest either a 4 or 5 weight, weight forward floating fly line for most of the fly-fishing.
Most all of your fishing should be done using small flies but you should also be equipped to
fish small streamers and larger terrestrial flies. A six weight floating fly line may be desired for
fishing small streamers and larger nymphs.

Fly Rod:
You should have a fly rod for both of the above line sizes. The four or five weight rod should
be between eight and nine feet in length. A medium to moderately fast action would be our
suggestion. The 6 weight rod would be best in a nine foot length and a medium fast to fast
action.

Fly Reel:
The reel for either of the three rods should have a good drag. You don't want to hang a large
trout and loose it because of a lousy drag.

Leaders:
You should use at least a 9 foot leader anywhere and anytime on Spring Creek. A twelve foot
length and even longer may be wise in some situations. You should have them in sizes ranging
from 2X for streamers, up to 7X for small dry flies such as midges.

Tippet:
Carry extra tippet material in sizes ranging from 2X to 7X.

Waders:
You will need waders in most all the places you will want to fish. We prefer the breathable type.

Wading Boots:
Felt soles would be our first choice. The new rubber soles may work well. We haven't tried
them on Spring Creek yet.

Flies:
We always recommend our "Perfect Fly" Trout Flies. We have specific imitations of all the
major insects . We hope you give them a try.
