Fly Fishing Gear and Trout Flies for Spruce Creek Pennsylvania
Spruce Creek is a purely small stream fishing in tight conditions with lots of tree cover. As you
can see in the photos taken in the public fishing area provided by Penn State, casting can be
difficult due to the tight tree cover. There are lots of places for the brown trout to hide but there
is also a lot of hatches to bring them out from their hiding places.
All of the fish you will catch will be wild brown trout. You can use fly lines ranging from a 4
weight floating line to a 6 weight floating line depending on the fly you are using. We
recommend a 4 or 5 weight, floating fly line for dry flies and lighter nymphs and a 6 weight fly
floating fly line for heavier nymphs and streamers.
Your leaders should range in sizes from a 0X for streamers up to a 6X for midges and small dry
flies. You should carry them in lengths ranging from seven and one-half feet for streamers, up
to 12 feet in length for small dry flies and midges. Nine foot would probably be the most used
You should carry spools of extra tippet material ranging from 0X to 6X.
We recommend a medium fast to fast action rod for the 4, 5 or 6 weight lines and nine feet in
The fly reels you use should be light weight with a good drag, preferably a disc drag. You don't
want to loose a nice brown trout because of a poor or rough operating drag.
We recommend waders. The stream is small enough to fish from the banks but the streamside
tree cover makes it impossible to cast from the banks in most of the public fishing area.
The bottom is slick and we recommend either cleats or felt soles for your wading boots.
As always, we recommend "Perfect Fly" trout flies. We suggest you look at our Spruce Creek
hatch chart and select the flies for the particular time of year you plan on fishing. There are a
lot of hatches that take place in this small stream and to be successful you have to be aware of
what the trout are most likely to be focused on.
