Fly Fishing Guide for the South and Middle Forks of the Stanislaus
River - Gear, Tackle and Flies
You can use fly lines lighter than a 5 weight floating line, but that's what we are
recommending for the least size fly line. Some anglers may prefer to use a 6 weight fly line
for their streamer fishing, but it wouldn't be absolutely necessary. Although they average
between 10 and 16 inches, the rainbows can go over 18 inches in this river.
Your leaders should range in sizes from a 0X for streamers up to a 6X for small dry flies. You
should carry them in lengths ranging from 71/2 feet up to 12 feet. There are some situations
where a long leader is required.
You should have plenty of extra tippet material ranging from 0X to 6X.
We recommend a 5 weight fly rod for almost all of the fishing on the South and Middle Fork
of the Stanislaus River. It should be a medium fast to fast action rod nine feet in length. If
you use a 6 weight line you would still want a medium fast to fast action and nine foot length.
The fly reel you use for the 5 or 6 weight line should have a very good drag. It should be as
light as possible and its drag should be adjustable in fine increments. This is an advantage
when you are fishing light tippets which you will be fishing often.
We recommend waders. You wouldn't have many options without them. You can use a float
tube at times of low water below Beardslet Reservoir.
We recommend felt soles for your wading boots. You may want to consider the new rubber
We think a landing net is a great idea for anyone wanting to make sure they land one of
Stanislaus River's large trout. You would be quite brave if you choose to not use one.
We definitely recommend our "Perfect Fly" trout flies. They are by far the best flies for the
Stanislaus River because they are the most realistic flies you can purchase. We have
imitations of every insect and other trout food that is present in this stream. If you haven't
done so already, we ask you to give them a try. We know you will not be disappointed.
