Fly Fishing Gear and Trout Flies for St. Vrain Creek
St. Vrain Creek is picture perfect small stream. The fish are mostly small fish but there's an
occasional nice fish hidden along the way to be caught from its waters.
We are recommending either a 4 or 5 weight, floating fly line for the most of the dry fly
fishing. The 5 weight fly line could handle small nymphs. We also recommend a 6 weight
floating fly line for larger nymphs and streamers.
Leaders should range in sizes from a 0X for streamers up to a 6X for small dry flies. Lengths
ranging from seven and one-half feet, up to 12 feet in length are suggested.
Extra tippet material ranging from 0X to 6X should be available for the leaders we list above
For the cutthroat and brook trout in the headwaters, we suggest a 4 weight fly rod. The
four, five and six weight fly rods should be 9 feet in length in our opinion. A medium fast to
fast action fly rods works best.
The fly reels you use for the 4, 5 or 6 weight lines should be as light weight as possible
with good drags.
We recommend waders. There would be few places you could fish very well without them.
We recommend felt soles for your wading boots.
As always we recommend "Perfect Fly" trout flies. Attractor flies work well at times but you
are always better off matching the most available insects with specific imitations. We have
specific imitations of all the aquatic insects in the St. Vrain Creek and imitating all stages of
life. They have proven very effective on the larger trout in this creek. We hope you will give
them a try and see for yourself. Check out our St. Vrain Creek hatch chart link on the main
