Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies for the Sugar River in New
We are recommending a 4 or 5 weight, floating fly line for all of the fishing. There are some
anglers that prefer a 6 weight fly floating fly line for heavier nymphs and streamers. You could
easily get by with a 5 weight most of the time.
Leaders should range in sizes from a 0X for streamers up to a 6X for midges and small dry
flies. Lengths ranging from nine feet up to twelve feet in length are suggested.
Extra tippet material ranging from 0X to 6X should be available for the leaders we list above.
We suggest either a 4, 5 or 6 weight fly rod for each line size you choose to fish. That will
handle about anything you will catch from the Sugar River. It should have a medium fast to
fast action and be nine feet in length.
The fly reel you use for the 4, 5 or 6 weight line should be light and have good drags,
preferably disc drags,
You would need waders on the Sugar River. We recommend breathable ones.
Felt soles or either the new rubber sole boots would work best.
We would call this optional but is always a good idea on higher water. The stream is fairly
easy to wade in most places.
We recommend our "Perfect Flies" because they are the best trout flies you can purchase.
The large, holdover trout can be very selective. Although you can catch the stocked trout on
the generics (which we also sell at a low price), we recommend more realistic imitations of the
naturals. We have flies that imitate all the aquatic and terrestrial insects in the Sugar River. If
you haven't already done so, we hope you will give them a try.
