Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies - Swift River Massachusetts
Fly Line:
We recommend either a 4, 5 and 6 weight fly lines for the Swift River in Massachusetts You
only need a floating fly line most of the time but you may want a sinking tip or sinking line to
fish the still water ponds, especially during cold weather.
Fly Rod:
We recommend either a 4, 5 or 6 weight fly rod for the respective line size you choose to use.
The fly rods should be nine feet long and in a medium fast to fast action.
Fly Reel:
The fly reel used should be for each of the 4, 5 and 6 weight lines you use and each have a
very good drag. We prefer disc drags but there are other types that will work as well. It should
be smooth.
Leaders:
Leaders should size 1X to 6X and be from 7 and a half to 9 feet long. Use shorter leaders for
streamers.
Tippet:
You should have spare tippet in 1X and 6X. Some anglers prefer fluorocarbon but mono is
fine.
Waders:
You will need waders. We recommend breathable ones. If you fish in cold weather you may
want neoprene waders.
Wading Boots:
Felt soles or either the new rubber sole boots would work best.
Wading Staff:
We would call this optional. It would be a good thing to have if you got caught in rising water.
Trout Flies:
We recommend our "Perfect Flies" for the Swift River. We feel like our specific imitations of
mayflies, stoneflies, caddisflies, and midges are the best flies you can purchase. We have
specific imitations of everything that hatches in the Swift River. Our streamers are also very
effective on large brown trout. If you haven't already done so, we hope you will give them a
try.
