Fly Fishing Gear and Trout Flies for the Taylor River, Colorado
The Taylor River has some huge trout, especially in the catch and release section of water
just below the dam. The ideal fly line size would probably be a 5 weight, floating fly line.
You could probably get by with just this one fly line size. Some anglers would prefer
something heavier for large nymphs and streamers.A 6 weight fly line would deliver most of
the streamers and nymphs better than the 5 weight. You may want to use a sinking tip line
for the streamers.
You would want a fly rod to handle both the above line sizes. The 5 and 6 weight rods
would be ideal at a length of nine feet. We think a medium to medium fast action would be
The reels for the 5 or 6 weight lines should have good drags. They should be smooth and
adjust to fine increments.
You should be using at least a seven foot leader anywhere on the Taylor River. Shorter
lengths work best for the pocket water. The leaders used in the catch and release section
should be longer. A nine foot length would probably be the best all around length although
some anglers use a long as a 12 foot leader. The only exception would be when you are
fishing streamers. You may want a shorter leader in that case. Make sure you have
leaders in sizes ranging from 1X for streamers, up to 7X for small flies.
You should also have plenty of extra tippet in sizes ranging from 0X to 6X.
Waders are necessary just about anywhere you fish the lower section of the river. We
prefer the breathable type but you may need neoprene waders if you are fishing during
the winter. Wading isn't recommended in the catch and release section.
Felt soles would be our choice.
The use of a wading staff would be optional.
You shouldn't try fishing the Taylor River without a landing net. If you don't use one, you
will probably hook the largest trout in the river.
We always recommend "Perfect Fly" trout flies. We have specific imitations of every
important insect that exist on the Taylor River and in every stage of life that's applicable. If
