Fly Fishing Gear and Trout Flies for Twentymile Creek (GSMNP)
You would probably want either a 4 or 5 weight fly line for all your fly fishing on this little
stream. You could get by using a 5 weight floating fly line for everything. A few anglers that
fish heavy nymphs and streamers may want to use a 6 weight fly line, but we are not going
to recommend it. There wouldn't be anything wrong with using a 6 weight line.
I would suggest a rod for the 4, 5 or 6 weight line that was nine feet in length. We think the
length helps in tight streams as opposed to hurts. Short rods have their advantage but the
disadvantages out weight the advantages. We think the best action is either a moderately
fast to fast action rod.
The reel for the four, five and six weight rods should have decent drags. They should be
smooth. A disc drag that adjust in fine increments would be best.
You should probably use at least a seven and half foot leader anywhere you fish the Great
Smoky Mountains National Park There arse situation where you would want to go up to nine
feet. Some anglers use a shorter leader for streamers. I would suggest having them in sizes
ranging from 1X for streamers, up to 6X for small dry flies and midges, in both the seven and
half and nine foot lengths.
You should have extra tippet in sizes ranging from 1X to 6X.
Waders are necessary for Twentymile Creek, unless the water is warm enough for you to
wet wade. We prefer the breathable type.
Much of the bottom in either gravel, sand or rock. You would not want cleats. Felt soles are
the best. We are testing the new rubber soles out and have no comment about them yet.
We recommend our "Perfect Flies". We think they are the best flies you can purchase. They
have been tested in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park more than anywhere. You
should have flies for the insects our hatch charts call for during the time you are fishing.
These flies are not only the most realistic trout flies you can purchase, they are the most
effective flies you can purchase. If you haven't already done so, please give them an
opportunity to work for you. You will be glad you did.
