Fly Fishing Tackle, Gear and Trout Flies for Trout Run Creek in
This stream has brook trout in its headwaters and brown and rainbow trout in its four
branches and the main stream.
We recommend a 4 weight or lighter floating fly line for the brook trout in the headwaters. A 5
weight, floating fly line is probably best for dry flies and lighter nymphs when you are fishing
for the browns and rainbow trout. We recommend a 6 weight, floating fly line for heavier
nymphs and streamers.
Your leaders should range in sizes from a 1X for streamers up to a 7X for midges and small
dry flies. You should carry them in lengths in 9 feet and 12 feet in length. Nine foot would
probably be the most used length. You may want some shorter lengths for streamers.
You should have extra tippet material ranging from 1X to 7X.
If you choose to use a 4 weight line or lighter one for the brook trout, then we would suggest
a 4 weight (or lighter) fly rod of a medium slow to medium actions that ranges from eight to
eight and a half feet long. The rod for the 5 weight line should be a medium to medium fast
action rod, depending on your preference from eight and one-half up to nine feet long. The 6
weight rod should have a good backbone and a little stiffer tip for nymph fishing. We would
suggest a nine foot medium fast to fast action rod for it.
The reel for the 4 weight fly line can be a clicker type drag. You can hand line all the small
trout. The 5 and 6 weight reels should have good drags, preferably disc drags that will adjust
in fine increments. You could use reels with different spool sizes, of course.
We recommend waders anytime you are fishing Trout Run Creek. Breathable waders are our
preference but you may want to have neoprene waders if you fish in the cold winter.
We recommend felt soles for your wading boots. You may want to consider the new rubber
sole boots that help prevent the spread of Didymo but we have not tested them on this creek.
As always, we recommend our "Perfect Fly" trout flies. If you haven't already tried our flies, we
certainly hope you will. They have proven extremely effective on spring creeks from the east
to the west coast.
