Types of Trout Streams - Freestone Stream
Although it is very difficult to designate all trout streams as one particular type of stream,
most of them are either labeled as a freestone stream, tailwater or spring creek. A freestone
stream begins as drops of water that fall as rain or snow. These little droplets of water
combine into larger drops of water. As they flow downhill, they form tiny tricklets which flow
together to form tiny streams. As the water continues to fall downhill, these little tiny streams
form larger streams. The small ones are usually called creeks and the larger ones called
