Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies - Weber River Utah
The Weber River has some very large, trophy brown trout. You don't want to use too light
of tackle. The ideal fly line size would probably be a 5 weight, floating fly line. Some anglers
would prefer something heavier for large nymphs, streamers and the large trout below the
dams. A 6 weight fly line would deliver most of the streamers and heavy nymphs better than
the 5 weight.
You would want a fly rod to handle each of the above line sizes. The five weight rod would
be ideal at a length of about eight and a half to nine feet. We recommend a nine foot
length. We think a medium fast action would be best for this one.
The six weight rod should be a little stiffer to handle larger nymphs and streamers. We
would say it should be nine feet in length in a medium fast to fast action.
The reels for the 5 or 6 weight lines should have good drags. They should be smooth and
adjust to fine increments.
You should be using at least an eight foot leader anywhere on the Weber River. There are
cases where you may want a 12 foot leader. The only exception would be when you are
fishing streamers. You may want a shorter leader in that case. Make sure you have leaders
in sizes ranging from 1X for streamers, up to 6X for small flies and midges.
You should also have plenty of extra tippet in sizes ranging from 1X to 6X.
Waders are necessary just about anywhere you fish the Weber River. We prefer the
breathable type but you may need neoprene waders if you are fishing during the winter.
The water stays very cold year-round in the tailwaters.
Felt soles would be our choice. The new rubber soles may work well.
The use of a wading staff would be an optional accessory.
You probably shouldn't be fishing the Weber River without a landing net. Losing a large
brown trout within reach would be heart breaking.
We recommend "Perfect Fly" trout flies. We have specific imitations of every important
insect that exist in the this river, in each stage of its life that's applicable to fishing. The wild
brown trout can be very selective. We have regular customers who fish the Weber River
year-round using our flies. If you haven't already done so, we hope you will give them an
opportunity to work for you.
