Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies for the White River in
As we have already mentioned several times, the trout in the White River can grow to a very
large size. Brown trout up to twenty inches are common. They are caught up to thirty inches
and larger. You do not want to hook one of these larger trout and have gear that is just too
light, so we are not recommending anything under a five weight category as you will see.
We recommend a 5 weight, floating fly line for dry flies and lighter nymphs and a 6 weight fly
floating fly line for heavier nymphs and streamers.
Your leaders should range in sizes from a 0X for streamers up to a 6X for midges and small
dry flies. You should carry them in lengths ranging from nine feet, up to 12 feet in length.
Nine foot would probably be the most used length. You may want some shorter lengths for
You should have extra tippet material ranging from 0X to 6X.
The rods for the 5 and 6 weight lines should be a medium fast to fast action rod nine feet
The reels for the 5, and 6 weight lines should have good drags, preferably disc drags that
will adjust in fine increments. You don't want to loose a nice brown trout because of a poor
or rough operating drag. You could use two reels with different spools, of course.
We recommend waders anytime you are fishing the White River. The water is cold even in
the summer. Breathable waders are preferred but you may want to have a neoprene pair if
you fish in the winter.
We recommend felt soles for your wading boots. You may want to consider the new rubber
sole boots that help prevent the spread of Didymo but we have not tested them at the White
As always, we recommend our "Perfect Fly" trout flies. We suggest you look at our hatch
chart and select the flies for the particular time of year you plan on fishing. We suggest a
good selection of streamers. We think our scud and sowbug imitations are the best you can
buy. If you haven't already tried our flies, we certainly hope you will. We are so confident
you will like them we guarantee your satisfaction.
