Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies - Youghiogheny River
We recommend a 5 weight, floating fly line for most of the fly-fishing on the Youghlogheny
River. We recommend a 6 weight, floating fly line for nymph fishing and streamers.
In our opinion, the fly rods should benine feet in length. A medium to moderately fast action
would be our choice.
The reels for either of these rods should have good drags. You don't want to hang a large
trout and loose it because of a lousy drag. Disc drags would be preferred.
You should be using at least a 71/2 foot leader anywhere on the Youghlogheny River. A
twelve foot length or even longer length may be the right choice in some situations where the
water is smooth. You should have them in sizes ranging from 0X for streamers, up to 6X for
small midge flies.
Carry extra tippet material in sizes ranging from 0X to 6X.
Although you can fish many areas from the bank, we suggest you wear waders anytime you
fish the Allegheny River. We prefer the breathable type but the neoprene ones can help keep
you warm if you fish during the cold season.
Felt soles are illlegal in Maryland. Rubber soles should be used.
The Youghiogheny River has some great hatches for a tailwater. There's mayflies, stoneflies
and caddisflies. We recommend "Perfect Fly" Trout Flies. We have specific imitations of
everything that exist in the Youghlogheny River that the trout eat. The flies are not only as
realistic as you will find on the commercial market, they are the most effective at catching trout.
We have several customers that have used our flies successfully on this river. If you haven't
done so already, please give them a try.
