Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies for the Youghiogheny
Basically, there are two types of water to fish in the Yough. The "catch and release" section
and for wild brook trout in the many headwater tributaries and uppermost main stream.
Most of the fish you will catch will be either wild brook trout, or rainbow and brown trout in the
C and R section. You can use fly lines much lighter for brook trout than a 4 weight floating
line but that is what we are recommending. We recommend a 5 weight, floating fly line for dry
flies and lighter nymphs for the C and R section and a 6 weight fly floating fly line for heavier
nymphs and streamers.
Your leaders should range in sizes from a 0X for streamers up to a 6X for midges and small
dry flies. You should carry them in lengths ranging from 7 1/2 feet up to 12 feet in length.
Nine foot would probably be the most used length.
You should have extra tippet material ranging from 0X to 6X.
The four, five or six weight fly rods should be a medium fast to fast action rod nine feet in
The fly reel you use for the 4 weight brook trout line (or even lighter) should be light but that
is about the only requirement. The reels for the 5 and 6 weight lines should have a good
drag, preferably a disc drag. You don't want to loose a nice brown trout because of a poor or
rough operating drag.
Waders are necessary for fly fishing the Youghiogheny River. We recommend neoprene
The bottom of the Yough can be rather slick in places. Felt sole wading shoes are illegal in
Maryland and you need to use caution as to which wading boots you trust.
We recommend Perfect Fly trout flies. The trout are stocked as fingerlings and this makes a
huge difference your strategies and flies used to catch them. Unlike stocked larger size trout,
the Yough's trout are used to feeding on the national food in the river, not pellets at a
hatchery. Having more realistic imitations of the aquatic insects can be a big plus. We have
imitations of all the major insects, crustaceans, sculpin and baitfish that exist in the Yough. We
hope you will give them an opportunity to work for you. .
